Model Context Protocol (MCP): Why It Matters for Connecting AI to Your Tools

AI assistants become far more useful when they can access your real tools and data — your CRM, documents, calendar, database or ticketing system. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic in late 2024, that aims to make those connections simpler and more consistent.

The problem MCP solves

Before standards like MCP, every AI app needed custom integrations for every tool. Connecting five AI assistants to ten business systems could mean dozens of one-off connectors to build and maintain.

MCP offers a common way for AI applications (“clients”) to talk to tools and data sources (“servers”). Build an MCP server for a system once, and any compatible AI client can use it.

What an MCP server can provide

  • Tools: actions the AI can take, like “create invoice” or “search customers”.
  • Resources: data the AI can read, like files, records or documentation.
  • Prompts: reusable templates for common tasks.

Why businesses should care

  • Faster AI projects: reuse existing MCP servers for popular tools instead of building from scratch.
  • Flexibility: switch or combine AI assistants without rebuilding your integrations.
  • Your own systems, AI-ready: wrap your internal database or custom software in an MCP server so approved AI assistants can use it.
  • Growing ecosystem: an increasing number of apps and platforms publish MCP servers.

Security first

Giving AI access to business systems requires care:

  • Grant the minimum permissions needed (read-only where possible).
  • Require human confirmation for sensitive actions like payments or deletions.
  • Only install MCP servers from trusted sources and review what they can do.
  • Log tool usage so you can audit what the AI did.

Example: an AI-ready CRM

Imagine your sales team asking their AI assistant: “Which leads from last week haven’t been contacted, and draft a follow-up for each.” With an MCP server for your CRM, the assistant can look up the leads, read their notes and draft personalised emails — with a person approving before anything is sent.

Getting started

Identify the two or three systems your team uses most, check whether MCP servers already exist for them, and consider building a secure server for your own custom tools. It’s one of the most practical ways to make AI genuinely useful inside your business.
